On March 4, 2000, hundreds of people showed up to protest the imminent closure of part of Fort Funston to all uses including dog walking. These dog owners/guardians also posted photos of their dogs who had been enjoying Fort Funston, also known as Dog Heaven.
On March 4, 2000, hundreds of people showed up to protest the half-built fence in the Fort Funston closure area (see photo above). Although the closure area has since been opened by a court order, then closed and expanded, the battle isn't over. Another lawsuit is being readied on behalf of all Fort Funston visitors, and help is on the way from the City of San Francisco, state legislators and the new administration in Washington. The overall stealth policy of closing off more and more GGNRA lands to recreation in favor of native plant gardening without an overall plan is going to be challenged in a big way over the coming year. Here are the photos which were posted on the fence on March 4th, 2000 -- the photos which gave birth to this Fort Funston Forum / GGNRA WatchDog website. Click on any photo to view a larger version. Enjoy! (Be patient; the photos will take a few minutes to display unless you are blessed with high-speed Web access!)
